The Generation Game - Julie Matthews
From the album ‘Perfect Mistake’ While and Matthews

Johnny came home in a temper last night
Put a fist through the door, bled on the floor
“He’s just an angry young man”, his Father said
His Mother knelt down with a bucket and cloth
While he’s on the sofa sleeping it off
“He’s just an angry young man”, his Father said

We follow the steps of our Fathers
Who cover the sins of their Sons
It gets passed on like our blood and like our name
And so the cycle goes unbroken
The mistakes are all the same
This is how we play the generation game

Kath took the baby and went back to her Mothers
He’d hit her again, put her arm in a sling
“I’ve seen this all before”, her Mother said
But do as I did and go back again
And put yourself last till the best years are past
“I’ve seen this all before”, her Mother said

We follow the steps of our Mothers
Who tend to the wounds of their Daughters
It gets passed on like our blood and like our name
And if the cycle goes unbroken
The mistakes are all the same
This is how we play the generation game

Caught like a tickertape tied to a spoke
And the wheel keeps turning and turning
Like trying to laugh at a tired old joke
With the secret part of you yearning - to scream

Some even maybe break open the mould
Like shedding a skin and starting again
This is how we beat the generation game
By keeping the best of the things that they taught us
And leaving their marks, here on our hearts
This is the prize of the generation game

We follow the steps of our Mothers and Fathers
Leading their Sons and their Daughters
It gets passed on like our blood and like our name
And if the cycle goes unbroken
The mistakes are all the same
This is how we play the generation game
This is how we play the generation game
This is how we play the generation game
